The WHO, or the World Health Organization, is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It was created in 1948 and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Its main tasks are to approve the biennial programme budget and to decide on major policy matters.
The Health Assembly is the supreme decision-making body. The Executive Board is composed of 32 individuals technically qualified in the field of health. Its main functions are to give effect to the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly, to advise it and generally to facilitate its work. The Secretariat is staffed by some 4,000 health and other experts in both professional and general service categories working at headquarters, in the six regional offices in countries. The Secretariat is headed by the Director-General.
